Covid and Elective Surgery

Intus surgeon Dr Deborah Wright is the New Zealand project lead for a new international study involving 140,000 patients from 116 countries that suggests a preoperative Covid-19 vaccine is particularly important for the over-70s and those undergoing surgery for cancer.

Dr Wright said that pre-operative vaccination could support safe elective surgery in New Zealand, by significantly reducing the risk of Covid-19 complications in patients if a significant outbreak occurred while they are being prepared for surgery.
