Pelvic floor health
Intus colorectal surgeons specialise in the diagnosis and management of defaecation and pelvic floor disorders. We work in a multidisciplinary team to ensure that the best expertise is applied to every individuals situation.
The pelvic floor has the very important job of keeping the bowel and all the pelvic floor organs in place and functioning correctly.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur in men and women of all ages. Many women especially suffer pelvic floor issues; childbirth is by far the most common cause of damage to the pelvic floor.
Intus provides diagnosis, consultation and care options for:
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Chronic constipation
- Faecal and/or urinary incontinence
- Difficult/incomplete evacuation
- Bladder dysfunction
- Pelvic discomfort
- Pain during intercourse
We specialise in pelvic floor health and are deeply committed to providing the best possible medical advice and care.
Our service provides patients with a detailed consultation with a specialist followed through to investigation, assessment and treatment. Your condition is approached in a multidisciplinary context which may involve physiotherapists, urologists and gynaecologists.
We host fortnightly Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings where each case is reviewed by a group of specialists where a consensus is made on an appropriate treatment plan.
Depending on the severity of your pelvic floor problems, treatments may vary from conservative through to surgical options.
Conservative options could include the following:
- Medication management
- Dietary management
- Pelvic floor exercise (Kegel exercises)
- Bio-feedback (Contrain®)
When conservative treatments haven’t improved symptoms or your problem is more severe, a surgical approach may be suggested. A specialist colorectal surgeon can repair the pelvic floor and greatly improve your quality of life.
