Ian Bradford
MBBCh, FRCS (Eng), FRCS (GenSur)
Colorectal Surgeon
Post graduate training/experience
Ian graduated from Wits University in 1991 and worked in Cape Town for two years before emigrating to the United Kingdom where he commenced his surgical training. He obtained his surgical qualification by Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996 and began specialising in colorectal and general surgery. In 1998 he was awarded a coveted Royal College Research Fellowship grant to undertake 2 years of research into Ulcerative Colitis at Newcastle University (UK), following which he spent a year in Hong Kong as Assistant Professor on an Ethicon Travelling Fellowship to advance his skills in laparoscopic surgery for bowel cancer. Ian obtained his Intercollegiate Specialty Board Examinations in 2003 and was appointed as Consultant in General Surgery and Coloproctology at York Teaching Hospital Trust in 2004 and as Senior Clinical Tutor at the Hull-York Medical School. There he held the positions of Lead Clinician for Bowel Cancer, Lead Clinician for Endoscopy and Lead Clinician for Laparoscopic Surgery. Through these positions of responsibility and through peer-review of his results he was accredited by the UK’s Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the British Society for Gastroenterology to train British surgeons in keyhole surgery and in colonoscopy respectively. In addition to Ian’s busy clinical role, he has been a keen educator and trainer of aspiring surgeons by being a faculty member on national courses for abdominal wall reconstruction surgery, the management of critically ill surgical patients and training courses for laparoscopic surgery. This pedigree has enabled him to work as an independent expert witness for surgical medicolegal cases and to guide three European surgical companies on a consultancy basis. Ian joined Intus in 2018 and enjoys using his international experience to benefit our community.
